Intermediate Years - Academics

The intermediate years are important ones at Batt Private School. Our 3rd , 4th , and 5th graders are working to reinforce the skills they learned during their first years at Batt, sharpen their critical thinking, and prepare for the challenges of middle school.

The intermediate students are making the transition with style. They are clever, hard-working students who are embracing their new curriculum. By third grade, our students are strong, confident readers. In the intermediate years, they broaden their horizons with a literature-based reading program. They continue to develop comprehension and critical thinking. They also deepen their knowledge of grammar, the mechanics of writing, spelling, and vocabulary. The third grade students love when Miss Judie, the school's founder, comes in to take spelling tests with them. Students enjoy writing workshops where they practice pre-writing, drafting, conferencing, revising, and editing. Each week they express their ideas with greater proficiency. Our young authors look forward to meeting visiting children's authors and illustrators.

Our math program continues to stress computation skills and conceptual understanding. As they advance through their intermediate years, students delve further into the concepts of algebra and geometry.

In social studies, our third graders focus on geography. Our fourth and fifth graders are engaged in a two year study of American History. Intermediate students are also embarking on a more in-depth study of Spanish. They have been embracing this new challenge with enthusiasm and energy. The fifth graders have begun the first year of a three year integrated science program. The curriculum focuses on life, earth, and physical science. They are looking forward to doing some of the same experiments as the middle school students.

It is during these years that Batt students also develop into responsible leaders. In the intermediate program, leadership themes are included across the curriculum. The classroom experience is enhanced by leadership seminars and guest speakers. More emphasis is put on community service. One of the most important ways we motivate our students is simply to share our expectation that they will develop into responsible leaders. It is our hope that they will internalize the belief that they are meant to be leaders.
